The Course

The course is split into two major components AS and A2.  The AS level can be sat in its own right (See "An explanation of the new AS A2 Levels" for more information).

Each lesson begins with a set of clearly stated objectives and an explanation of its place in the overall programme of study.

Effective learning is encouraged through frequent activities and self-assessment questions.

There are ten tutor-marked assignments.

 

Key Topics Covered

The course covers the six modules that match the units if assessment (exam papers). These units are as follows

AS Level

  • Textual Commentary
  • Desk Study
  • The Language of the Media

A2 Level

  • Module Four: Varieties of English
  • Module Five: Spoken or Written Commentary
  • Module Six: Editorial and Language Topics

The course develops the following abilities: to communicate clearly, to analyse language (both spoken and written), to explore different media, dialects, registers, etc.

The Syllabus

This course prepares candidates for the Edexcel English Language AS level syllabus 8178 for examinations in 2004 and later years.

Candidates may wish to add to this qualification by studying the A2 component (syllabus 9178). The full advanced level comprises AS and A2.

Assessment at AS level is normally by three written Papers (3 more for A2).

 

Set Texts

There is no requirement to buy specific supporting texts, although advice is given on suitable additional reading in the introduction.

 

Coursework

Although coursework is an option for syllabus 8178, it is assumed that Oxford Open Learning students will be taking the non coursework option.

 

Special Requirements

It is assumed that prospective candidates for this course have obtained a pass mark of C or above in English GCSE or an equivalent qualification.
